CLASSMATES MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Ann Cunningham Bowers
In the picture below from the Herald Mail article, Ann
points out, on an aerial photograph, the first acre of land on her farm that
was enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program in 1997. As it
ended up, it was the first acre in the country and she was recently recognized
in Washington, D.C., as the program reached a million acres. (Editor's Comment:
Way to go Ann, you make us proud!)
RECENT EVENTS
One candidate running for President of the United States,
Senator McCain, took the time to visit Operation Welcome Home and thanked the
group for welcoming the troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The program

FAMILY ACTIVITIES/EVENTS/UPDATES
Linda Delauder Eden
Dave and I took our 6th grade grandson, Dixon, to Washington
over his spring break last week. Dave, who was born in DC, looked forward to
showing him the many museums, monuments and the zoo. We were all thrilled with
the new museums, monuments and the pandas at the zoo. The cherry blossoms were
still lovely.
Then it was time to head to the battlefield leg of the trip.
Off to Gettysburg and their brand new Welcome Center. What a spectacular place
that is. You can spend hours in there and the restaurant is great. Of course
the almost 12 year old was mesmerized with all the monuments and history. We
had already spent a day in Harpers Ferry on the way to DC, so he had plenty to
look forward to.
On the way to Antietam, we stopped in Funkstown to visit
with Judy & Terry Gossard in their lovely home. Lunch the following day, at
the Funkstown Tavern, was great fun with Judy & Terry, Kirklyn and Susie.
We look forward to seeing them all again next year when we all turn 70. While
in Hagerstown, Dixon was shown my old home, schools, City Park and the
highlight...a Superior Dairy ice cream cone.
We had seven days of lovely weather and memories to last our
lifetime and hopefully, Dixon's. He lives near us here in the Western NC
mountains, so we are very fortunate indeed. (Click on pics below for larger
image.) (Editor's Comment: Isn't it great to come home again? Especially with
grandchildren.)
Sara Marvin Sites
On April 9, Jack and I became grandparents for the 4th time.
Our son, Brian, and his wife, Kelly, had a son, Matthew David Stites. Matthew
has a 3 year old sister, Ella. Our daughter, Lauri and her husband have a
daughter, 11, and a son, 7, also. The first photo is Brian, Ella and Matthew
when Matthew was about 4 hours old. The second picture is a very happy grandma,
Sara Marvin Stites, with Matthew. (Click on pics for larger image.) (Editor's
Comment: Aren't grandkids grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat?)
Glenn Julian
Glenn recently had some of his artwork featured in a local
organ and it also highlighted some of his mother's artwork as well. Below is
the cover that you can click on to link to the full article. (Note: It is a PDF
but you should have no problem opening since Adobe Reader is installed on virtually
every PC as a standard piece of software. If you don't have Adobe Reader, click
on the following link to download and install - ADOBE READER. You can increase
the size of the image so the text is easy to read by simply clicking on the
down arrow on the first bar where the current size is indicated in % and select
100% for example.) (Editor's Comment: For you REALLY old folks, you can jump it
up to 150% or even 200%!)
DO YOU REMEMBER?
June 13, 1958: This day, the story on the space race was presented not by experts, but by elementary school pupils in Hagerstown, Md. Their science program "A Visit to the Planets" was televised in classrooms across the city. The pupils: Judy Snyder, left, Nancy Grove, Larry Michael and Stephen Murray. (Editor's Comment: Did we live in a simpler age or what?)
