Hubs Going After Fifth Straight Win in Battle With Southern High Tonite

"Homecoming Game" Carded for Stadium At 8 0'Clock

Hagerstown Favored to Take Measure of Invader From Baltimore;
Southern Eleven Victorious in Last Two Games

Hagerstown High School's Hubs will be trying to wrap up their fifth straight win and their sixth triumph of the season tonight when they entertain the Southern High Bulldogs of Baltimore in an inter-city football contact at Municipal Stadium.
It will be the annual "Homecoming Game" for the Maroon and Gray eleven and it is expected that the Hubs will come through with a victory for the old grads. Kickoff time is slated for 8 PM with a crowd of 3,000 or more anticipated.
The Hagerstown gridders, who haven't been beaten since bowing to Allegheny back on Sept. 28, have been established a one-touchdown favorite to take the measure of the Baltimore invaders, but the Southern team won't be a soft touch.
Coach Stan Fieldman's Southern eleven has bagged its last two games in convincing fashion, blanking Mervo Tech, 20-0, and Loyola, 19-6. Prior to that the Bulldogs whitewashed Forest Park, 6-0; McKinley, 20-14; City 13-6; and, Patterson Park, 26-7.
That makes them 3-4 on the season, and a win tonight would pull them even.
Fieldman is no optimist, but he professes that "I think we can make a game of it and give the fans of Hagerstown an interesting evening." Fieldman has personally scouted the Hubs and calls the halfbacks Terry Strock and Pat Henry "the fastest backs we've seen this year, while fullback Dick Baker is the hardest runner."
"Hagerstown also has a lot of poise for a high school team", Fieldman observes.
The rival coach, Mel Henry, of Hagerstown, is nearly as emphatic in the praise of Southern. He saw the Bulldogs beat Loyola last week and came away impressed by the size of their first team line, the all around ability of clever quarterback Jerry Boeckman and the running of the halfbacks Jim Williford and Roger Butschky.
Southern operates from a modern Split-T, using the inside belly series and featuring the quarterback a lot on wide sweeps, rollout type of play. Boeckman has been a thoroughly capable operative at the position. He's a senior, stands 5-4 and weighs 164.
Williford and Butschky, the halfbacks, are small but fast, with the former weighing 135 and the latter 160.
Up front, however, the Bulldogs have size in the likes of center Larry Butera, 190; right tackle Don Lacher, 210 and Allen Brown, the other tackle, 190. Co-captain Harry Suit, who will go at right guard, weighs only 156 but Fieldman calls him "the best ballplayer we have." What he lacks in size he makes up for in speed and aggressiveness.
From the Hubs camp yesterday came the cheering news that Nick Carter, first-string left end, will be available. He's been suffering from an infected tooth and Henry for a time feared he might miss this one.
So with Carter ready, the Hubs will present no changes in their offensive lineup. On defense, though, junior Vernon McSherry at a defensive tackle post.

Hagerstown High Gridders Draw High Praise after Thumping Southern, 34-0

Strock Scores on 47, 13-Yd. Runs
Even Second-Stringers Get Into The Act As Halfbacks Dave Riser and Dick Knode Contribute to Lopsided Victory
By Joe Snyder

Hagerstown High School's gridiron powerhouse, which on this occasion even featured a couple of reserves in scoring roles, buried Baltimore Southern beneath a five-touch-down avalanche at Municipal Stadium last night as the Hubs stretched their win streak to five with a 34-0 romp.
To the utter delight of 3,300 Homecoming fans who looked on in nippy autumn weather, Hagerstown sprung Terrific Terry Strock loose for touchdown jaunts of 47 and 13 yards and got one-touchdown contributions from quarterback Roger Kisiel and two second-string halfbacks, Dave Riser and Dick Knode.
This was Hagerstown's sixth victory of a slow-starting season which has seen the Hubs progress remarkably fast. They dropped two of the first three but in the last five have been well-nigh invincible. Last night's whitewash job represented their fourth straight shutout, and their goal hasn't been crossed in 18 periods of play.
The statistics tell vividly the overwhelming superiority the Hubs enjoyed over their Baltimore rivals. Hagerstown picked up 15 first downs with 362 yards rushing and 36 passing. Southern was held to seven firsts, 78 rushing yards and 31 by passing.
The Hubs unveiled a second-team backfield of Terry Bailey, Ed Spencer, Riser and Knode which took up where the first team left off. Riser and Knode both scored in the second half after Hagerstown had established a 21-0 intermission edge.
As usual, the Hubs' powerful running game did most of the damage but their three pass completions set up the fourth score, in the third stanza. The first team moved to the Southern 5 and Coach Mel Henry let the reserves take it the rest of the way.
The Hubs had a touchdown in four plays from scrimmage after returning Southern's opening kick-off to the Hagerstown 33. Halfback Pat Henry set the visitors on their heels at the outset with a 45-yard sprint to the Southern 22. Fullback Dick Baker rammed to the 16 and Henry to the 13. Strock then headed wide around right end, cut back sharply and ran unmolested to pay dirt for the first score. Terry also booted the extra point to make it 7-0 within three minutes.
The Hubs didn't score again in that period, but they came frightfully close. On the last play of the quarter, fourth-and-three on the Southern 40, the locals went for the first down and nearly wound up with a touchdown instead.
Baker slammed off the right side, streaked past the scrimmage line, cut to the left and almost outraced the entire Southern team. But end Jim Cox nailed him with a desperation dive at the one-yard line.
On the second play of the second stanza, Kisiel sneaked over for the tally after failing to make it on the first try. It was 14-0 after Strock booted the conversion.
Southern drove to the Hub 33 after the kickoff but Hagerstown's rugged defense held and the visitors had to punt. Strock returned Jim Williford's boot to the Hub 24 and moments later made the game's most exciting touchdown run.
With Hagerstown at the Southern 47 and four minutes left in the half, Strock swept right end wide, almost went out of bounds but picked his way cleverly past a host of Southern tacklers and went all the way for his second TD of the game. He also kicked the point again and the Hubs left the field at halftime with a 21-0 margin to work on.
Southern kicked to open the second half and the Hubs promptly instituted a 65-yard scoring march requiring 16 plays. It was here that Hagerstown took to the air, completing its three passes during this advance. Kisiel hit Baker on the Southern 48. Strock found Henry at the 25 and Kisiel flipped to Strock on the 5 to set up the score.
The Hub second string went in and Riser scored from the 1 on fourth down, with Strock converting to make it 28-0.
Southern couldn't move again after the kickoff and Williford punted dead on the Hub 37. From there, Hagerstown drove to its final TD with the No. 2 backfield going most of the way although Strock came in to contribute helpful gains.
Finally, to culminate the drive, Knode went off the left side from the 3 and Strock missed the extra point. His placement veered to the right of the crossbars.
But the Hubs had a 34-0 spread which was quite enough indeed, to keep their win skein alive. Only Frederick remains on the schedule and the cadets aren't conceded a chance in next week's game here.
